Otitis in Dogs: Causes and Treatment

Otitis in dogs commonly presents with symptoms such as:

  • an unpleasant ear odor
  • yellow or green discharge
  • itching
  • frequent head shaking
  • pain when the ears are touched

Possible causes include:

  • bacterial infections
  • Malassezia yeast
  • ear parasites
  • foreign objects in the ear canal
  • excessive moisture and poor ventilation, which create favorable conditions for microorganisms to grow

Depending on the underlying cause, treatment may include ear cleaning, appropriate antibacterial or antifungal medications, and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Note: Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or ear drops without veterinary guidance, as they may cause irritation or damage to the ear.

Treating ear infections involves more than simply eliminating unpleasant odors and discharge. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause is essential to reducing the risk of recurrence.
