Patellar Luxation Surgery in Dogs
Patellar luxation is a common orthopedic condition in dogs, particularly in small breeds. When the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position, affected dogs may show signs such as limping, intermittently lifting one leg while walking or running, an abnormal gait, or pain during movement.
In mild cases, the condition may be monitored and managed according to the veterinarian’s recommendations. However, when the patella frequently slips out of position, affects mobility, or may lead to further joint damage, surgery may be considered to correct the condition and improve the stability of the kneecap.
The video below features an actual patellar luxation surgery performed at Wa. Pet clinic & studio, with the direct participation of a Japanese veterinarian specializing in small animal surgery. Based on the patient’s condition and clinical examination, the veterinarian evaluated the case and selected an appropriate surgical approach to improve knee joint stability and support postoperative mobility.
Postoperative care and rehabilitation also play an important role in recovery. Physical activity should be restricted according to the veterinarian’s instructions, while follow-up examinations and the use of the affected leg should be carefully monitored throughout the recovery period.
